Hi, my name is Juliana Chin Isogai. I am the herbalist at Hen Sen Herbs. I was born and raised here in Seattle, WA. I literally grew up in my father's herbal shop, touching, smelling even playing with herbs.
Ever since I was a little kid, I have always had a great appreciation for herbs. Herbs have helped improve the quality of my life as well as thousands of others, including my own children.

When the first time a patient come to see her, she would spend the first 30 minutes to 1 hour (or as long as she thinks necessary) to get to know the person. She would try her best to understand the physical and emotional state of the patient as well as his/her lifestyle and even his/her personal beliefs (from hereon, it will be referred as "his" for simplicity). This is an essential part of treatment process, not because it helps diagnose his health conditions (which by the way, she can instantly tell just by examining external conditions of the body) , but because it reveal the root cause of his illness. And it also helps build a trust between the patient and the herbalist.
She might ask, "What kind of medication are you taking right now?" or "Do you drink alcohol?" "Do you like to eat spicy food?" "How's your bowel movement and how often?". Sometimes questions are direct and other times they are not. People usually don't like to be questioned or don't want to reveal too much about themselves at initial consultation. So most of times, she would try learn about the patient by having a long regular conversation with him. How did Hen Sen do it? Read the ariticle on the right.
After this process of understanding and building trust, her first job as a herbalist is help him understand what is causing him to be ill and how to prevent it. She would then teach him how to maintain his health by eliminating the causes of the problem and changing certain aspects of his life. Changing his diet is the first and most important step towards the healing. A patient is usually provided with "Bland Diet" sheet (list of suggested foods) and a booklet on "How keep yourself healthy with food". These would give a patient a guideline to follow and the basic understanding of how the daily diet affect individual's health.
Through the conversation with the herbalist, he will learn that herbal treatment is a secondary in the process of healing. It is simply a aid, though it is very powerful, to the body's nature to heal itself. He will learn that his responsibility is to eliminate the causes of the problems. In other words, he might have to stop eating certain foods or drinking alcohol, or reduce the intake of drugs, etc. (which is considered the major cause of modern illnesses).
With an effort, on the part of the patient, to learn his responsibility, the herbalist could simply focus on bringing the balance back to his body by eliminating toxins and strengthening the certain area of the body. It is not easy to change the lifestyle or eating habits, however; it is critical if you want to receive maximum benefits from herbs.
"Here are what some of her patients say about her."
My name is Norm Dinsmore, I am retired and I live in Maple Valley , WA. In September of 2006 I was diagnosed with cancer on the small bowel and cancer on the liver. I also have an irregular heartbeat. I had to take several heart medications and some prescription drugs for my cancer.
On November of 2008 I was hospitalized, and informed that my internal organs have shut down and that I should inform my family that my death was imminent. My brother knew of some of his friends, that had gone to Juliana’s father and they have had good results. Consequently, I decided to try Hen Sen Herbs.
My stomach was distended and I looked about seven month pregnant. The doctor told me that they could do nothing to remove that fluid from my abdomen. In a very short time with Juliana’s herbs, my stomach returned to a flat position. My tumor is getting smaller and my internal organs are starting to function.
With my condition, as critical as it was, Juliana has spent a great deal of time with me in order to correct the situation. She calls sometimes daily to monitor any problems that I might have.
Just recently, my heart was acting up and it put me into involuntary shaking. This usually results in about a week stay in the hospital. However, Juliana told my wife and daughter what to do and the shaking stopped. It was late at night and Juliana offered several times to come to my home and treat me. What is note worthy about this, she offered to come to our home, when several of the roads were impassable because of the flooding. So, to say that Juliana went extra mile for us is an understatement.
Our family including my wife and I have recommended Hen Sen Herbs to our friends and family and because of my progress several family and friends have become patients.
Sincerely,
Norm Dismore
Hi Juli,
Yes! you can use my feedback on your website. That would be great. And also I just want to say Thank you so much for everything you have done for me and helping me with my health problems, you are really, really a life saver for me. I have never felt this good and have energy in a very long time and I'am so greatful to have met your father and especially you to helping me and educating me in Herbal Medicine and doing other alternatives for healing instead of taking medications. I will definitely pass this down to my children. The healing will never be lost.
Thank you, Juli!

Juliana's life as an herbalist started at the age of 5. Her father, Hen Sen Chin, was her teacher. He would let her smell and taste different herbs at his shop every day, so she could learn the basic of herbal healing at young age. She was very natural from the beginning and developed uncanny talent for it. By the time she started the formal training as an herbalist at the age of 12, she was already able to distinguish close to thousand different herbs by the smell, taste and looks. It was almost like knowing all the vocabulary and grammar to speak a new language.

She was eager to pursuit the art of Chinese Herbal Healing even further. However, she was well aware that knowing the herbs and the theory of treatment meant nothing without real-life experience of helping actual patients. So she was already seeing patients in her father's office at the age of 12, learning everything from her father about diagnosis and prescribing herb for them. She took meticulous notes on every single cases and stay up late at night with her father and studied cases to figure out what works the best for each unique cases.
She wrote her first prescription at the age of 14 without her father's help. She recalls, "It was the patient with severe stomach pain. My father knew I could handle the case by myself.", "I was very happy because he came back next week with no more pain." By the time she reached 20, she was the real force behind the scene. She had major input into prescribing herbs for patients. She was also responsible for creation of most of Hen Sen Specialized Pills. She was even making house calls for severely ill patients. She flew to San Francisco, Minneapolis, Toronto and even Paris to take care of her patients. Even though she doesn't do house calls anymore, patient still fly in from different area of the country to seek her help.
